Mayor Dixon Hosts Back-to-School Celebration

Baltimore, MD (August 21, 2008) – Mayor Dixon was joined by Dr. Andres Alonso, CEO of the Baltimore City School System, and Paul Graziano, Commissioner of the  Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), for a back-to-school rally at the School System Headquarters on North Avenue.  The annual event drew thousands of young people and adults to receive school supplies, back-to-school haircuts and health screenings.

“Our Annual Back-to-School Rally is held to help thousands of kids start the year off right,” said Mayor Dixon.  “It is our responsibility to send every young person to school ready to learn.”

The annual event, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and DHCD, provides school supplies, resource information and on-site services to youth and families to help prepare them for the upcoming school year.  Every child is eligible to receive one back-pack with pencils, paper and other supplies.

This year, five managed care organizations (Diamond Plan, Amerigroup, Priority Partners, Maryland Physician’s Care, Doral Dental) will provide onsite dental screening and blood pressure screenings.  Additionally, the Baltimore City Health Department will oversee onsite immunizations for children...
